The Open Letter
Many producers and directors express to me at some point during the interview process that "sound is very important to them." I'm always glad to hear that, but getting good sound is a collaborative effort requiring the cooperation of every department. I will always do my best, but without the entire crew working together to ensure good sound, mixers like me often feel like we're fighting an uphill battle. This "Open Letter from your Sound Department" was written by John Coffey (of Coffey Sound in Hollywood) with input from many respected sound professionals to explain the challenges we face and what can be done to ensure good sound for your production. Every filmmaker who values their sound owes it to him/herself to read this letter.
